What Is the Jaguar Type 01?
The Jaguar Type 01 is a four-door luxury electric Grand Tourer (GT).
A Grand Tourer is designed to combine performance with long-distance comfort. So, the Type 01 is not simply a high-performance sports car. It is designed to offer fast acceleration while also providing a comfortable environment for long journeys.
The Type 01 is the first production Jaguar based on the company’s new Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA), a dedicated platform developed specifically for the brand’s next generation of electric vehicles.
Jaguar says the name Type 01 also carries a meaning:
- Type connects the vehicle with Jaguar’s historic Type cars.
- 0 represents zero tailpipe emissions.
- 1 represents the beginning of a new generation.
This makes the Type 01 an important model in Jaguar’s future product strategy.
A Completely New Jaguar Design
One of the most noticeable things about the Type 01 is its design.
Jaguar has moved away from the traditional design language used by many of its previous models and created a much more futuristic and dramatic appearance.
The car features:
- A long bonnet
- A low roofline
- A long, flowing side profile
- 23-inch wheels
- Frameless doors
- Slim LED headlights
- Full-width rear lighting
- Hidden door handles
- A deployable rear spoiler
Jaguar describes this design approach as part of its “Copy Nothing” philosophy.
The idea is simple: instead of following the design trends of other luxury EV manufacturers, Jaguar wants its new cars to have their own distinctive identity.
Aerodynamics Plays an Important Role
The Type 01 is not designed only to look futuristic. Aerodynamics has also played an important role in its development.
Jaguar says the vehicle has a drag coefficient of approximately 0.23 Cd, making it one of the company’s most aerodynamic vehicles.
The car uses several aerodynamic technologies, including:
- Active aerodynamic elements
- Airflow management
- A three-stage deployable rear spoiler
- A streamlined body design
Better aerodynamics can reduce air resistance and therefore help an EV use less energy at higher speeds.
This is especially important for a luxury EV designed for long-distance travel.
1,030 PS and 1,365 Nm of Torque
The Type 01 is extremely powerful for a luxury electric GT.
It uses a three-motor electric powertrain:
- One electric motor at the front
- Two electric motors at the rear
- All-wheel drive
- Intelligent torque vectoring
The system can produce up to:
1,030 PS of maximum power
and
1,365 Nm of torque.
This power is not intended only for straight-line acceleration. The intelligent torque-vectoring system can distribute torque between the wheels to improve traction and handling.
That means Jaguar is trying to combine high performance with controlled and confident driving dynamics.
0–100 km/h in Just 3.2 Seconds
The acceleration performance of the Type 01 is closer to a high-performance sports car than a traditional luxury GT.
Jaguar says the vehicle can accelerate:
0–100 km/h in 3.2 seconds.
It can also accelerate from approximately 100 km/h to 180 km/h in around four seconds.
This gives the Type 01 enough performance to compete with some of the fastest luxury electric vehicles in the market.
118 kWh Battery and Up to 720 km Range
The Type 01 uses a 118 kWh usable battery pack.
According to Jaguar, the maximum WLTP range is:
Up to 450 miles, or approximately 720 km.
The estimated EPA range is around:
400 miles, or approximately 644 km.
This difference is important because WLTP and EPA use different testing methods.
| Specification | Jaguar Type 01 |
| Usable Battery | 118 kWh |
| WLTP Range | Up to 450 miles / ~720 km |
| EPA Range | Up to 400 miles / ~644 km |
| Highway Range | Up to 320 miles |
| Electrical Architecture | 850V |
| Motors | 3 |
| Drive | All-Wheel Drive |
The 720 km figure should therefore be described as the maximum WLTP range, rather than the guaranteed real-world range.
Actual range will depend on factors such as driving speed, temperature, road conditions, traffic, use of climate control, and driving style.
850V Architecture and Fast Charging
Long range is only one part of the EV experience. Charging speed is equally important for people who frequently travel long distances.
The Type 01 uses an 850-volt electrical architecture and supports DC fast charging at up to 350 kW.
Jaguar says a compatible 350 kW charger can add approximately:
200 miles / 321 km of range in about 13 minutes.
The vehicle can also charge from around 10% to 80% in approximately 22 minutes under suitable conditions.
This can significantly reduce charging stops during long journeys.
However, actual charging performance will depend on the charger, battery temperature, state of charge, and charging infrastructure.
Advanced Battery Thermal Management
Battery temperature has a major impact on EV performance and charging.
If a battery becomes too hot or too cold, charging speed and efficiency can be affected.
Jaguar has therefore developed an advanced thermal management system for the Type 01.
The system manages thermal energy between the battery and the passenger cabin and is designed to help maintain suitable temperatures under different driving and weather conditions.
This technology can help improve both charging performance and overall efficiency.
50:50 Weight Distribution and Air Suspension
High power alone does not make a performance vehicle.
A vehicle also needs good balance and suspension control.
Jaguar has designed the Type 01 around a 50:50 weight distribution.
The vehicle also features:
- Four-corner air suspension
- Twin-valve active dampers
- Switchable-volume air springs
- All-wheel steering
- Intelligent torque vectoring
These systems are designed to give the car a balance between comfortable long-distance driving and more dynamic handling.
For example, the suspension can prioritize comfort during highway cruising while providing more controlled responses during enthusiastic driving.
A Completely New Interior
The interior of the Type 01 follows the same philosophy as the exterior: minimal, modern, and different from traditional Jaguar interiors.
One of the most distinctive features is the long central spine, which runs through the cabin and creates a unique interior layout.
The cabin includes:
- 24-inch OLED driver display
- 7-inch central touchscreen
- Digital rear-view display
- Panoramic roof
- Premium materials
- Jaguar Immersive Sound System
- Cabin mood lighting
- Fragrance features
Jaguar’s goal is to create a more modern interpretation of luxury rather than simply copying the traditional luxury-car formula.
Digital Rear-View System
One interesting technology in the Type 01 is its digital rear-view system.
Instead of relying only on a conventional rear window, the vehicle uses a camera-based rear-view display.
This allows Jaguar greater freedom when designing the rear section of the car and helps create the vehicle’s distinctive exterior shape.
It is also an example of how digital technology is changing traditional vehicle design.
23-Inch Wheels and Hidden Technology
The Type 01 can be equipped with large 23-inch wheels, which contribute to its dramatic appearance.
Jaguar has also attempted to hide many of the vehicle’s technology elements within the body.
Examples include:
- Hidden door handles
- Discreetly integrated sensors
- Deployable rear spoiler
- Concealed storage areas
- Flush design elements
This gives the car a cleaner and more minimalist appearance.
How Practical Is the Jaguar Type 01?
Although the Type 01 is a performance-focused luxury GT, Jaguar has also considered everyday usability.
The company says the car offers more than 450 litres of combined load space, along with additional storage areas.
This means the Type 01 is not designed purely as a weekend performance vehicle.
It is intended to work as a luxury long-distance touring vehicle as well.
When Will Jaguar Type 01 Enter Production?
The Type 01 is scheduled to enter production in 2027.
Production will take place at Jaguar’s Solihull plant in the UK.
Jaguar says the Electric Drive Units and battery packs will be produced in Wolverhampton, while pressed body panels will be produced at Halewood in Merseyside.
Orders are expected to open in early 2027.
The expected timeline is therefore:
October 2026 → Global Premiere
Early 2027 → Orders Open
2027 → Production Begins
2027 onward → Customer Deliveries
Therefore, the Type 01 should currently be described as an officially unveiled upcoming EV, rather than a vehicle already available for regular customer delivery.
Jaguar Type 01 Price
Jaguar has announced a UK starting price of approximately £130,000.
US pricing has been reported at around $130,500.
Some reports have also indicated an India price of around ₹2.20 crore, but India-specific pricing and delivery information should be treated carefully until Jaguar officially confirms the market-specific details.
The high price clearly positions the Type 01 in the premium luxury EV segment rather than the mass-market EV segment.
Is the Jaguar Type 01 an Autonomous Vehicle?
No.
The Type 01 should not be classified as a Level 3 or Level 4 autonomous vehicle.
Its main focus is:
Electric performance + luxury + technology + long-distance touring.
The vehicle does include advanced driver-assistance and digital technologies, but that does not make it an autonomous vehicle.
For an EV and autonomous vehicle database, the Type 01 would therefore be better classified as:
Electric → Luxury EV → Grand Tourer
rather than as an autonomous vehicle.
Why Is Type 01 So Important for Jaguar?
The importance of the Type 01 goes beyond its specifications.
Jaguar has been working on a major transformation of its brand. The Type 01 is the first production model to bring that new strategy to the market.
Jaguar wants to position itself as a more exclusive luxury brand, with a clearly different identity from JLR’s other brands such as Range Rover, Defender and Discovery.
The Type 01 is therefore the first major test of this strategy.
If customers respond positively to the vehicle, it could establish the design and technology direction for Jaguar’s future electric models.
What Are the Biggest Challenges for the Type 01?
Despite its impressive specifications, the Type 01 faces several challenges.
1. High Price
With a starting price of more than £130,000, the Type 01 will be out of reach for most EV buyers.
It will compete in a highly competitive luxury segment.
2. Rebuilding Jaguar’s Identity
Jaguar needs to convince customers that this new electric direction still represents the character and emotional appeal associated with the brand.
3. Strong Luxury EV Competition
The premium EV market already includes powerful products from several established luxury manufacturers.
Jaguar therefore needs more than impressive specifications to attract buyers.
4. Production Execution
Launching a new EV is one thing; producing it at scale while maintaining quality and meeting delivery timelines is another.
Jaguar’s production execution from 2027 onward will be closely watched.
5. A Very Different Design
The Type 01 looks dramatically different from previous Jaguars.
That could become one of its biggest advantages because it makes the car distinctive.
But it also creates a risk because some traditional Jaguar customers may find the new design too different.
Is the Type 01 More Than Just Another EV?
Yes.
The Type 01 should be viewed as a brand-reset vehicle for Jaguar.
Three major changes can be seen in this car.
Electric Transformation
Jaguar is moving toward a dedicated electric architecture rather than simply converting an existing combustion-engine platform into an EV.
Luxury Repositioning
The company is targeting a more exclusive luxury market rather than trying to compete mainly on vehicle volume.
Technology-Led Design
The 850V architecture, tri-motor AWD system, active aerodynamics, digital rear-view system, advanced thermal management, and new interior architecture show how technology has influenced both the vehicle’s engineering and design.
Most importantly, Jaguar has moved beyond the concept stage. The Type 01 is a production model scheduled to enter manufacturing in 2027.
Outcome
The Jaguar Type 01 is not simply Jaguar’s first major new electric vehicle; it is the first major test of the company’s new identity.
With up to 1,030 PS, three electric motors, a 118 kWh battery, an 850V architecture, fast charging, and up to 720 km of WLTP range, the Type 01 has the technical specifications expected from a modern luxury performance EV.
At the same time, its dramatic design and technology-focused interior show that Jaguar wants to create a very different identity for its electric future.
However, the real test will begin in 2027.
Jaguar must prove that customers are willing to pay more than £130,000 for this new electric interpretation of the brand.
If the Type 01 succeeds, it could become much more than a successful luxury EV. It could become the foundation for Jaguar’s next generation of electric vehicles.
In simple words: Type 01 is Jaguar’s attempt to start over in the electric luxury-car era—and 2027 will show whether that strategy can succeed.
