Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated India’s first tempered/cover glass manufacturing factory set up by Optiemus Infracom in Noida. This factory will produce tempered glass for mobile phones domestically, reducing dependence on imports. The inauguration took place on Saturday, 30 August 2025.
What does this factory make?
The plant manufactures protective tempered/cover glass used in smartphones. This is the glass that strengthens mobile screens and protects them from scratches and shocks. The unit has been set up in partnership with Corning, a global leader in glass technology.
Total Investment (₹870 crore) and Phase-wise Plan
The project involves a total planned investment of around ₹870 crore. In the first phase, around ₹70 crore has been invested, with further investments expected in the coming phases. Different reports mention ₹800–₹870 crore, indicating that the company will expand capacity step by step.
Initial Production Capacity
In the first phase, the plant has an installed capacity of about 25 million (2.5 crore) units per year. This phase alone will directly employ over 600 people.
Jobs and Expansion Plans
With expansion, the company aims to create more than 4,500 new jobs in the coming years. This is seen as a strong step towards deepening the electronics manufacturing value chain under the Make in India initiative.
Partnership: Optiemus + Corning
Optiemus has partnered with Corning for this plant. With Corning’s expertise in advanced glass technology, the unit is expected to deliver both high quality and large-scale production.
